You may be considering contacting us to see if we can offer therapeutic support. This section has been developed to answer as many of your questions about psychotherapy as possible.

What does psychotherapy involve?

Psychotherapy is a process where the therapist uses their training and skills to assist the client with the emotional difficulties they may be experiencing. It helps the person to understand and accept their strengths and weaknesses, as well as what makes them feel confident or anxious. Identifying feelings and ways of thinking helps the person to cope with situations they find difficult, and therefore develop new ways of approaching them.

What happens in psychotherapy sessions?

Together, we will develop a shared understanding of your difficulties, identify how these problems affect your thoughts, behaviours, feelings and daily functioning, identify goals and agree to a shared treatment plan. The focus of therapy is to enable you to generate solutions to your difficulties that are more helpful than your present ways of coping.

How many sessions will I need?

This will vary depending on the difficulties you are experiencing and also their severity. Following the initial assessment appointment we would agree together how many and how frequently sessions are to be arranged. An average number is between 4 and 12 sessions, but this would be reviewed with you as therapy progresses. Therapy sessions are for 50 minutes duration.

What sort of problems can psychotherapy help with?

Psychotherapy can help with a wide range of problems.

Are sessions confidential?

All personal information disclosed in therapy is totally confidential unless you inform us of anything that might indicate you are at risk of harming yourself or somebody else, or at risk from others. If this were to occur, we have a professional duty to inform your GP. If your therapy is funded by an insurance company, or part of an on-going legal claim, we may be asked to provide a report on the treatment undertaken and the progress made.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.
