Accidents and illness
Physical illness can affect the way our brain works, cause our mood to lower, and in some case, leads to depression. Some examples are: coping with life threatening illnesses like cancer or heart disease, painful illnesses like arthritis, viral infections or hormonal problems, dealing with traumatic events like serious accidents. Other emotions may surface like feeling constantly anxious, angry about the situation you find yourself in, sadness because of the loss of good health.
ProTherapy can help the client to explore some of the issues around trying to manage long term illness or the after-effects of experiencing a serious accident.
In terms of traumatic accidents, research suggests that blaming another and the belief that one could have avoided the accident in some way, are predictors of poor coping. Very often, the question 'why me?' is prevalent with accident victims and sufferers of long term illness. This response illustrates the need for the client to have meaning for the illness or traumatic event. ProTherapy can help clients come to terms with their situation and move on with their lives. Therapy also allows the sufferer to talk through their negative feelings in confidence as they may not want to worry their partner, family or friends. Withholding difficult emotions in the way described can exacerbate the client's existing health issues.
